Cochecho River Project: What Does a River Mean to a Community?

Great Bay Trout Unlimited, the city of Dover, and the Landowner Relations & Aquatics Education Programs of NHF&G have teamed up to bring the Cochecho River back to the citizens of Dover area. Thanks to land conservation easements along the river, arranged by the City of Dover with Liberty Mutual & Measured Progress, Great Bay TU and the Landowner Relations Program, have worked together to develop access trails along the river for all to enjoy. So on a crisp fall day, donıt be surprised to see 50 of so Dover Middle School students, lead by Judy Tumosa (Aquatic Education Coordinator), and Karina Jollie ( Letıs Go Fishing Coordinator) of NHF&G, doing a ³river dance² to stir up and gather some of the bugs that live on the river bottom. The bugs (macro invertebrates) will tell them about the health of the river habitat. Water testing, also done by the students, will tell the rest of the story.

Back in the classroom, the 7th & 8th graders will raise brook trout from eggs in a special chilled aquarium, in part supplied by GBTU. They will learn the secrets of the life cycle of this native NH trout, and when the fish are big enough, let them go in the river that the students will know so well. Add some bigger stocked trout, courtesy of GBTU, and you have a beautiful setting to cast a line and enjoy the autumnal majesty of NH.

It is only through your generous support of Great Bay Trout Unlimited that the resources exist to help make projects like this become reality.
