What to Expect
A typical day at the camp will start at breakfast at approximately 8 am, after which students will attend class until noon when they break for lunch. In the afternoon, students will spend their time learning about habitat and the ecosystem on the river. Dinner will be served at 6 pm followed by time to reflect and have fun. Learning the art of fly-fishing and how to use the equipment will be interwoven throughout the 4 days. Lights go out at 11 pm. This is not just a chance to relax, but an opportunity of a lifetime.
Fly Fishing
Every day students will learn the lore of fly
fishing. We’ll cover fly casting and tying,
equipment maintenance, reading water, etiquette
and most importantly, safety. Students
will learn where trout and salmon live
and why, what flies work and when they’re
most effective. They’ll learn how to become
a successful fly-fisher. Many of the principles
taught in our indoor classes, (fly-tying,
ecology and conservation) will be put into
practical use streamside.
Additional Learning
Our indoor classes will fall into two categories:
ecology and conservation. The ecology
program will cover the physical characteristics
of cold water habitats, basic aquatic
vegetation and life cycles of trout and
salmon.
Conservation
The conservation program will cover issues
that many of our cold-water fisheries face.
Some topics will include point and
non-point source pollution, assessing
streams and ponds for possible trout populations
and an awareness of the laws that
affect fisheries.
