Kids Trout Camp
July 9-13, 2008
Great Bay Trout Unlimited will host New Hampshire's 2nd Kids Trout Camp in Pittsburg, NH, on July 9 - 13, 2008. Last year, a total of six children participated in the five day, four night camp, which provided them the opportunity to learn how to fly fish and experience first hand the precious natural environment that encompasses our trout streams.

Bill and Janet Thompson, owners of North Country Angler fly shop in N. Conway, presented a program on fishing in the Mount Washington Valley. They shared their extensive knowledge of the Saco R., Ellis R., Swift R., and the local small streams and trout ponds located in the White Mountains. Peter Whalen to spoke on: Fly fishing the New Hampshire and Maine coast for Striped Bass

Captain Peter Whelan has been fly fishing in saltwater for the past 30 years. He has saltwater fly fished around the world from the Florida Keys to Christmas Island in the Pacific for several species including bonefish, permit, tarpon and many offshore species. Peter currently guides in the summer months for Striped Bass, Bluefish and Bluefin tuna here in New Hampshire. He is the past President of CCA New Hampshire and serves on the Board of Directors. He holds his Captains License and is a Registered Maine Guide. His speach on techniques and locations was enjoyed by all who attended.

Fly Tying Night!
Monday, January 7, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. at the Urban Forestry Center on Elwyn Rd. in Porstmouth.

A great night of fly tying had by all. We had several tyers demonstrating various patterns at multiple stations. It was an excellent opportunity to learn how to tie flies, learn new techniques, or have your questions answered. We tied Hare's Ears, Woolly Buggers, Serendipities, Elk Hair Caddis, Quill Cahills, Gartside Sparrows and more.

All attendees will receive a free ticket for our door prize. A 1/2 day guided trip on the Exeter River for one with Registered N.H. Guide Sean Smith.

We would also like to thank Jeff Barnum, the President of CCANH, who has also generously donated fly tying materials and other fishing equipment to our chapter for the taking.

Conservation Award Winning Warren Winders spoke on the Brook salter restoration in Bourne Mass.
Oct. 1,2007

Warren Winders was a recent recipient of the Field & Stream Conservation Hero Award for his work on the Red Brook, one of the last streams in Massachusetts that holds Salters, (a brook trout that migrates into the ocean). In 1990, Warren Winders made it his mission to ensure that sea-run brookies would flourish in the coastal stream. This informatative talk will provide us with vital information that may help our own Salter restoration efforts in the Cocheco River.

We thank Warren for his very informative and interesting talk, and especially want to thank him because he opted to wave his guest speaking fee as a donation to our chapter! Thanks Warren!!

Nottingham Fishing Derby
May 10, 2008

The derby is held on North River in Nottingham, near town office parking lot, Rt 152. The person in charge is Janet Horvath, Recreation Director of Nottingham. The derby's hours are 8:00 AM- 12:00 noon. This derby is for Nottingham residents. For additional info. If volunteering, please contact SteveTravis,TU coordinator, stltfly@verizon.net or ph: (603) 679-8798. We normally provide 2 people to support this event as we measure fish caught. If there are additional volunteers , there would be other services that could be done, assisting kids as needed.

Youth Fly Fishing Team USA Tryouts
May 9th - 11th 2008

The Youth Fly Fishing Team USA will hold a clinic and tryouts on May 9th - 11th 2008. The event will take place at Lock Haven University's Seig Conference Center on Fishing Creek in Lamar, PA. Co-ed applicants must be 14 through 18 years of age at some time during the 2008 calendar year.

From these tryouts, six anglers will be chosen to represent the USA at the 7th annual FIPS-Mouche World Youth Fly Fishing Championships, to be held in Penacova, Portugal in August 3 – 10, 2008.

RECENT NEWS

Update on CT River Forest challenge

Some good news to report about the TU/SPNHF collaboration to protect the Connecticut River Forest:

1.SPNHF received word last week that it will receive a $900,000 donation from an anonymous donor toward the project!  That puts the fundraising total to date at nearly $2 million.  The fundraising goal is $2.8 million by June 15.

2.The Ammo Chapter has risen to the donation challenge posted by the Basil Woods Chapter with a $1000 donation!   We are hoping to hear from the other NH Chapters in the next few weeks with their response to the challenge. Congratulations to the Ammo and Pemi chapters on their successful banquet as well.

3. Relatedly, TU national has hired Joe Norton (recently the Exec. Director of the NH Wildlife Federation) as the new Upper CT River Home River Coordinator.  A more formal announcement is expected soon.  

All in all, these are great news items as we look forward to a major focus on protecting, reconnecting and restoring the Upper CT River in NH and VT.

GBTU donates $1000 towards the Lamprey River Forest Conservation Initiative - Mission Completed!

A 73-acre parcel that includes more than 3,000 feet of frontage on the Lamprey River in Epping has been added to the permanently conserved Lamprey River Forest thanks to the efforts of a local family and a consortium of environmental groups. The Lamprey River is a federally designated Wild & Scenic River. The conservation effort was a collaboration of the Southeast Land Trust, the Lamprey River Advisory Committee, the Town of Epping, and the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests (Forest Society).

"We're grateful that so many partners and donors made it possible to add this important parcel to our Lamprey River Forest Reservation," said Jane Difley, president/forester of the Forest Society.

2008 Mid-Winter Bald Eagle Survey Yields Record N.H. Sightings
January 28, 2008

Eagle-eyed observers saw a record-high total of 67 bald eagles in New Hampshire during the 2008 National Mid-winter Bald Eagle Survey two-week count period in January, including 59 (30 adults, 29 immatures) observed on Survey Day. The effort was coordinated by New Hampshire Audubon in collaboration with the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department's Nongame and Endangered Wildlife Program. >Read Full Text
