President's Message October 2010

Off and Running

Our 2010-2011 chapter meeting season started off well on Monday, October 4th, with guest speaker, Thomas Ames, Jr. Mr. Ames gave a detailed and beautifully photographed talk on the common aquatic insects and innovative flies with which to imitate them that one is likely to encounter on our New England streams. He also talked a lot about the behavior of these insects and how different techniques of fishing flies can make all the difference between a day of casting practice and a day of landing some fish. It is too bad that more of you didn't take advantage of this excellent and informative guest speaker.

Poor Wendy Nixon! Her name was drawn in the Equipment Repair Lottery, but she had forgotten to put in her $1, so the pot will be over $70 equivalent value for use in one of our local fly shops. I am sure she will be playing next month! It really is too bad, because Wendy deserved it. She has done an amazing job helping to organize the new event that took place on Saturday, October 2nd on the Cocheco River. Amy's Treat is a local nonprofit organization that helps Seacoast Cancer Center patients get through their cancer treatment and find some joy by arranging fun recreational activities. Great Bay TU was honored to be given the chance to work with Amy's Treat to help provide a day of sunshine, and great fishing on the Cocheco River for these patients. The turnout of volunteers and community support for this event was impressive. I am sure that it will be an annual event from now on. Thank you to everyone who had a role in supporting this event, and special thanks to Wendy for such a fine job of organizing it.

I would like to thank board member, Mark Favorite, for accepting the appointment of acting interim treasurer for the chapter. We really can't function without one. Hopefully, we will have some candidates on a ballot in an interim election for treasurer soon.

Next month we will be trying something new at our chapter meeting on November 1st. We are going to have a movie night. We have been given permission to play "The Good Life: Tall Tails from the East" (yes, "Tails" not tales) a Gray Ghost Productions feature. This movie will take us from Labrador to the Florida Keys to give us a taste of some of the best fly fishing available around the East Coast. You may see some people you know in this movie too. Do you like your popcorn buttered?

Get out there and enjoy some fall fishing. See you next month.

Tight Lines,
Mitch Kalter, Chapter President
